    Playlist: 2000s+ Metal

Playlist, that is 5 hours of some of my favorite metal from when I finished high school 2001, or later. I saw Tool live for the first time that fall.

    Dillinger Escape Plan Band

    Math metal, but faster.

More bands should go Dillinger Escape Plan Band-level hard. One of the highlights of my life was the time one of these dudes hit me in the head with their guitar while crowd surfing. I saw them the first time at Irving Plaza in New York when they were touring for Ire Works. Absolutely bonkers show.

They were climbing on the speaker stacks and doing wild stage dives. They would randomly launch themselves into the stage and play while crowd surfing. This was near the end of when I would go in the pit at shows. Glad I got close enough to see something this wild.

Only and I’ve ever seen go this hard live is Nine Inch Nails. Same approach to beating the songs out of their instruments and then throwing them — literally — aside.

The other time I saw Dillinger was at Williamsburg Music Hall. This was after the time I got hit by a truck, I was off crutches but still slow. I stood in the balcony, which was a neat view. They had no security in front of the stage, and were just letting people on the stage fo awhile and then they would nock them off the stage with a shoulder or something.

    Stupid dangerous.

    Meshuggah

    Everyone’s favorite extreme metal band.

I am completely aware that the Meshuggah songs on this playlist are from the 90s and I don’t care. These are foundational records for this kind of music.

The first time I saw Meshuggah was opening for Ministry on their “Farewell” tour. This was right before Obzen Came out.

I saw Meshuggah for the third time in 2023 at Stage AE for their Immutable Tour.

I know I saw them sometime after that at Terminal 5. Not sure when.
